Wine Advocate 87 points - Moving into a southern Rhone-like blend of 53% Grenache, 23% Syrah, 18% Mourvedre, 4% Cinsault and 2% Counoise, the 2009 Byzance spent 24 months in a combination of French and American oak, 20% being new and the balance one-to-four-year old barrels. Juicy, jammy and loaded with fruit, it offers notions of spiced cherries, blackberry, bramble and potpourri along with a medium-bodied, straightforward palate. Cotes du Rhone-like in its easygoing, fruit and spice-driven profile, it’s a solid drink and should be consumed over the coming 4-5 years. Drink now-2018. (Jun 2013)

Wine maker notes
When coming up with the original blends at Brian Carter Cellars a decade ago, I had two criteria: inspiration from a region of the world that produces splendid blended wines and an ability to make great wine here in Washington that reflected the classic nature of those blends. No wine, no region inspired me more than the Chateauneuf du Pape and the terroir of Washington was already giving me wonderful Syrah and some intrigue for the variety Grenache. Little did I know how these humble beginnings would translate into the Byzance we have today. The fruit we are getting out of the Grenache with its ripe cherry character has exceeded my wildest expectations. The incredibly important addition of Mourvedre with its spice and structure, and more recently the high notes of Counoise and Cinsault have resulted in a wine exceeding my expectations by logarithmic quotients. Drink this wine blind with a bottle of Chateauneuf.

Brian Carter, renowned veteran winemaker, is proud to present his unique collection of premium releases under the Brian Carter Cellars label. Brian Carter Cellars is the first winery in Washington State to focus exclusively on an array of hand-crafted European-style blended wines, showcasing Brian’s personal passion for blending wines from Washington State’s unique terroir. Brian Carter has been twice awarded ”Winemaker of the Year” by Washington Magazine. Brian was extremely honored to be selected Vintner of the Year by his peers.
