Wine Advocate 94 points - A great wine in the making, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (just under 10,000 cases produced) possesses a fragrant bouquet of sweet black currants, crushed rocks, earth and background oak. Full-bodied and dense, with Montelena’s typical power, tannin and reserved nature, this is a big, rich, formidably endowed red that requires 4-5 years of cellaring. That in itself is atypical of this exuberant, flamboyant vintage. Given this cuvee’s past history, this 2007 should age for 30+ years.  (Dec 2010)

Wine Advocate 92 points - The finest of these three vintages appears to be the 2007 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. As always, there are approximately 10,000 cases of this cuvee, and it sees about 25% new French oak. The 2007 exhibits terrific black raspberry and black currant fruit, an attractive core of minerals, earth, and spice, a fragrant bouquet, admirable purity, full body, and sweet, velvety, noticeable, but not intrusive tannins. The 2007 may be the finest Cabernet Sauvignon Estate since their 2004, 2002, and 2001. (Dec 2008)

Located just north of Calistoga in Napa Valley, CA, Chateau Montelena was founded by Alfred L. Tubbs in 1882. By 1896, it was the seventh largest estate in the Napa Valley. In 1958, the Tubbs family sold the Chateau to Yort and Jeanie Frank, who transformed the estate's grounds into the beautiful showpiece that it is today. When the Barrett family bought the property in 1972, James Barrett restored the original vineyards and completely refurbished the winery. His son, Bo Barrett is master winemaker and has overseen the production of each and every vintage of Chateau Montelena. His knowledge and more than 30 years of experience ensure consistency in terms of quality and proper expression of the house style. Winemaker Cameron Parry manages all winemaking activities with the help of assistant winemaker Matt Cratfon and vineyard manager Dave Vella. The now infamous Paris tasting of 1976 placed California, and in particular Chateau Montelena at the forefront of the wine world and the family continues to build upon their success. The portfolio now includes Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Riesling.
