Intense, bold aromas of cherry and raspberry abound. Full-bodied and persistent with smoky, spicy, and earthy flavors. Ripe, sweet tannins and ample acidity finish off this wine.
Wine Spectator 89 points - Black currant, cedar and light herbal flavors are reminiscent of Bordeaux, yet this tastes New World, with the emphasis on fruit. The tannins are dense, with a lingering finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2016. 3,500 cases made.-BS  (Sep 30 2011)

Wine Advocate 93 points - The flagship 2009 Poggio Bestiale is 40% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot aged in French oak barrels. It bursts from the glass with blackberries, smoke, graphite and licorice. I especially like the way the wine fleshes out on the mid-palate and finish. Hints of new leather, spices and licorice linger on the close. This is a great showing from the Poggio Bestiale. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. (Jun 2012)

Wine maker notes
Produced from a single vineyard whose name references the steep slopes that are considered a “beast” to cultivate by the vineyard workers, the label artistically reflects this characteristic. Full in body and well-structured, Poggio Bestiale bursts from the glass with blackberries and licorice aromas, and hints of smoke and graphite. Its elegance is marked by the sweet tannins that linger on the palate along with aromas of leather and spices. New, medium-toasted French oak barrels are used for aging the wine for 14-18 months. The wine is cellared in bottle for 6 months for further refinement.
