Wine Advocate 91 points - The 2004 Barolo Ravera is another beautiful effort. Ravera is a vineyard that typically yields wines with a firm tannic spine, yet this Barolo has plenty of fruit to provide an engaging counterpoint. Dark cherries, plums, tar and smoke all come to life as this elegant, medium-bodied Barolo struts its stuff. The Barolo Ravera is aged for a year in French oak (40% new) followed by a second year in cask. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. ” (Oct 2008)

An intense garnet red, lively and brilliant with a slight orange rim. Is nose appears candid, elegant and strong, evoking dog-rose, mint and tobacco that in time turn to fragrances of spices, coffee, liquorice and truffle with a leather and mineral finish. In the mouth it appears full, rounded, strong bodied and well balanced. It has a forward flavor of plum preserve and dried blackberry with a chocolate finish giving a harmonious and pleasant aromatic persistence. It is extremely affable in its first years, becoming austere with classic elegance and boldness as time goes on. It loves braised meats, game in wine and roasts and matured cheese, it goes well with sheep cheese and Parmesan cheese.

“The Ravera cru near the village of Novello is planted at just over 1,200 feet. You can feel the influence of the altitude in this refined ‘04 - dynamic flavors coalesce around the lean, elegant structure. It’s all cherries and plums when first poured, and with air gains earthy complexity as aromas of dried porcini and a sanguine mineral character begin to emerge. Its flavors are edged along in the gentle grip of the wine’s tannins, a progression that feels composed and classical in nature. Cellar this for a decade or more, or decant for grilled rack of lamb.”

Producer
The Elvio Cogno winery sits on the top of Bricco Ravera, a hill near Novello in the Langhe area of Piedmont, one of the eleven communes in which Barolo is produced. The cellar is housed in an 18th-century manor farm surrounded by 11 hectares of land, all occupied by vineyards. After a long and fruitful partnership with Marcarini at La Morra, in 1990 Cogno bought a splendid historical farm in the family village and restored it to its former glory. Today the winery nestles in a breathtaking landscape between the hills and the sky. At sunset on clear days, a wonderful turquoise horizon frames the farm like a painting. Hence the name of this exceptional wine land: ‘Petorchino’, or blue feet. The Cogno family has been making wine in the Langhe area for four generations: the values of history and tradition handed down by father Elvio are enhanced by the freshness and innovation introduced by his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore.
