The grapes for the Annette’s Reserve are grown in abeautiful vineyard of sloping red loam and shale soils located in eastern Redwood Valley in Mendocino County. This 60-acre vineyard, planted to Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignane, abounds with head-pruned, dry-farmed old vines that produce low yields of dark, concentrated fruit. Conscious biodynamic practices, for which this area is known, ensure a purity of flavors and distinguished complexity.
When making our Annette’s Reserve Zinfandel, we started with a solid base of Zinfandel and then lifted and layered the aromas and flavors with Carignane and Petite Sirah. The Zinfandel provided unctuous, ripe fruit up front and spicy, menthol accents, while the Petite Sirah, at 11 percent, gave enhanced color, structure and tannins and the Carignane, also at 11 percent, brought midpalate grip and a big punch of fruit. We aged the wine for 16 months in a combination of French, American and European oak barrels, further deepening the layers and fine structure of this wine.
