For this 100% Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, winemaker Phillip Baxter carefully considers his barrel selections to craft a wine that displays the amazing diversity that is the Anderson Valley.
During ten years as winemaker in the local area, Phillip has become familiar with different micro-appellations and their characteristics. He now applies this experience to create a true signature of the Anderson Valley. From the ridge-tops to the Valley, and from sheltered to exposed vineyards, the resulting wine is as varied as it’s sources: vibrant, complex and spicy with a smooth rich mouthfeel.
Our Black Label is a vibrant, spicy and elegant Pinot Noir. The nose is focused and floral with scents of cranberry, violets, orange blossom and allspice. On the palate big flavors of pomegranate, plum and black cherry combine with elements of exotic spice resulting in a smooth rich mouthfeel. The lingering finish is alive with the memory of ripe fruits while the wines’ mineral core leaves the palate fresh, poised and ready for more.
This wine is made using artisan methods and a completely natural approach to vinification. Harvested by hand each clone was fermented separately in small open-top tanks using native yeast. After a cold-soak, the grapes were punched down by hand, then pressed in a gentle basket press. The wines is aged in 100% neutral French oak barrels before being blended and bottled.
In 2002, two generations of our family - both winemakers by trade - came together to create BAXTER, highlighting the very best in North Coast viticulture. Father & son partners, Phil L Baxter and Phil T G Baxter, produce handcrafted single vineyard wines focusing on the Anderson Valley and surrounding Mendocino appellations. Known primarily for their Pinot Noir, the pair combine over fifty years of experience, producing wines naturally, applying instinct and using old-world techniques. They craft wines that possess a notable ‘purenessí of fruit, reflecting the unique identity of each vineyard site.
